ABOUT THE PLAY: Chainsaws? Check. Singing Zombies? Check. A cabin in the woods and a whole lot of fake blood? Absolutely! The gleefully gory musical mashup based on the cult classic Evil Dead film series serves up over-the-top horror with a side of catchy tunes and outrageous comedy. It follows five college students who unleash ancient demons in an isolated cabin. Armed with a chainsaw and “boomsitck”, S-Mart employee Ash must battle his possessed friends. It’s campy, gory, and absurdly fun, a wild ride you don’t want to miss.

REHEARSALS: Rehearsals begin in late August, early September. The rehearsals schedule will be finalized after casting based on cast member conflicts. The goal is to have 5-day/per week rehearsal schedule.

WHAT TO BRING: A headshot, one-page theatrical resume, AUDITION INFORMATION form, and 16-32 bars of sheet music for your audition song.

VOCAL AUDITIONS: Choose a 16-bar cut (30 seconds to one minute) of a song that showcases your vocal range and performance ability. Pop/rock and contemporary musical theatre are the styles of show music. Please make sure you have properly prepared your sheet music for our audition pianist: in the correct key, properly printed with ALL notes and words visible, hole-punched, and in a binder. Please no acapella singing

Cast of characters:

In reference to the character descriptions below – The characters in this show are on the binary and written with he/him or she/her pronouns as you will see in the following descriptions. However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to list on the audition form the roles they most identify with.

All roles are open to consideration regardless of background, ethnicity, or sexual/gender orientation. All roles are Non-Paying/Non-Equity.

The Main Survivors

Ash Williams: The iconic, dim witted S Mart housewares employee. He evolves from a reluctant, nervous college kid into a confident, chainsaw wielding, one:liner:spouting hero who battles Kandarian Demons.

Cheryl: Ash’s nerdy, easily spooked sister. She is the first to be possessed by the woods, transforming into a brash, vulgar, and highly comedic demon.

Linda: Ash’s perfect, sweet girlfriend. She acts as a voice of reason early on, but eventually becomes one of Ash’s most dangerous (and headless) adversaries.

Scott: Ash’s crude, rebellious, and selfish best friend. He’s the stereotypical “party guy” who ignores warnings, accidentally unleashes the evil, and is the first to suffer the consequences.

Annie: The brilliant, overbearing archaeologist. She arrives at the cabin searching for missing pages of the Necronomicon (Book of the Dead) and ends up leading the fight alongside Ash.

Supporting Cast & Demons

Shelly: Scott’s beautiful, ditzy, and party loving fling. She is quickly possessed by the evil forces and becomes a taunting demon.

Ed: Annie’s cowardly, pushover boyfriend and fellow researcher. He eventually turns into a “bit part demon” while retaining his polite demeanor.

Jake: A stereotypical, stubborn Southern local. He is hired to help guide Annie and Ed to the cabin but is largely reliable only for comedic missteps.

Professor Knowby: The mysterious original owner of the cabin and the voice on the audio recordings who first translated the Book of the Dead.

The Moose: A highly unusual, mounted Candarian Demon moose head on the cabin wall that comes to life and belts out songs.

Ensemble & Creatures

Evil Trees: Sentient, nasty trees of the forest that trap and attack the campers.

Fake Shemps / Demons: A catch:all for various ensemble members who play background demons, severed body parts (including Ash’s possessed, detached hand), and other background gags.

Marcy Park: Over-achiever.

Leaf Coneybear: Homeschooled and wearing a homemade cape.

Chip Tolentino: Boy Scout and former champion.

(All other character’s double)
Carl Grubenierre: One of Logainne’s fathers; he has set his heart on his little girl winning the Bee, no matter what he must do, including sabotaging William’s foot. Usually played by the actor who plays Leaf.

Leaf’s Siblings: Not very confident of Leaf’s abilities, to say the least. They often ridicule him for having lower intelligence compared to everyone else in the family. Usually played by the remaining spellers (both cast and the volunteer audience spellers).

Regarding Working at the Gilbert
The Gilbert Theater is a semi-professional, community-minded theater which offers paid positions to professional and semi-professional actors in leading or specialty roles and volunteer opportunities.

Actor Compensation
The theater is unable to compensate actors at a level which recognizes the value of their talent, training, or time in the way a fully professional company might. Compensation ranges from Guest Artist to a simple gas stipend. Contract terms are negotiated individually.

***The Gilbert Theater has a noted history of cross-gender and non-traditional casting practices. Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are strongly encouraged to audition.

Theatre’s Statement
The Gilbert continues to actively explore ways to engage with our diverse community in regards to the representation of culture, race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, and disability on and off stage. We create more opportunities for actors and other artists who have been historically underrepresented on and off the stage.

What to prepare: A song from RENT

About the show:
RENT is a groundbreaking rock musical that tells the story of a group of young artists and friends struggling to survive and create a life in New York City’s East Village under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Written by Jonathan Larson, the musical is a modern adaptation of Puccini’s opera “La Bohème” and features a diverse and dynamic cast of characters. Themes of love, loss, and the fight for authenticity are central, set against a backdrop of economic hardship and social challenges. With memorable songs like “Seasons of Love” and “La Vie Bohème,” RENT is celebrated for its raw and powerful portrayal of the bohemian lifestyle in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
