ABOUT THE SHOW
After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry, in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door, and – most especially – his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. HAND TO GOD explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS
& Roles and requirements:

(While the characters of JASON, TIMOTHY, and JESSICA are 17 in the context of the script, due to the subject matter, only performers 18+ will be cast)

JASON/TYRONE – Male Presenting
Jason is timid, grieving the sudden death of his father, and trying to be a good son. Tyrone is his hand puppet, who seemingly takes on a devilish, foul-mouthed life of his own to express Jason’s repressed anger and darkest impulses.

TIMOTHY (Timmy) – Male Presenting
The high school “alpha male” and neighborhood troublemaker. He is aggressive and impulsive but is fundamentally insecure and hides deep emotional pain. He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but his provocative actions disrupt the church group.

JESSICA – Female Presenting
The girl next door and a high school outsider. She is intelligent, deadpan, and fiercely observant. She is unafraid of the chaos happening around her and brings moments of grounding intelligence to the madness.

MARGERY – (30-50) Female Presenting
Jason’s mother. She is deeply stressed, struggling with her own recent widowhood, and desperately trying to keep control of her life and the church puppet ministry. Beneath her devout, church-going exterior lies a powder keg of grief, intense sexuality, and frustration.

PASTOR GREG – (35-50) Male Presenting
The local minister. He is well-meaning but ultimately ineffective and a bit of a buffoon. He is heavily invested in keeping up appearances in a conservative Texas town, while also nursing his own inappropriate romantic interests and loneliness.

Hickory Community Theatre encourages people of all races, ethnicities, identities, body types, physical and cognitive abilities to audition. Theatre is for everyone, and HCT believes in representation and equity for all.
