About the Show
Head Over Heels is the bold new musical comedy from the visionaries that rocked Broadway with Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Avenue Q and Spring Awakening. This laugh-out-loud story is set to the music of the iconic 1980’s all-female rock band The Go-Go’s, including the hit songs, “We Got the Beat,” “Vacation,” and “Mad About You.”
A hilarious, exuberant celebration of love, Head Over Heels follows the escapades of a royal family on an outrageous journey to save their beloved kingdom from extinction — only to discover the key to their realm’s survival lies within each of their own hearts. Through a plot containing usurped kingship, unlikely lovers, and gender-fluid disguises, Head Over Heels preaches unconditional love and acceptance.
Character Descriptions
Ages 16 and up. All races, ethnicities, body types, and gender expressions are welcome to audition for any of the roles listed. Strong vocal and comedic skills are vital to each character.
BASILIUS (he/him): King of Arcadia. Husband to Gynecia. A hothead, but not a despot. Blindly thinks Arcadia is doing great under his masculine rule, which will be sorely tested during the course of the show. Vocal Part: Tenor.
GYNECIA (she/her): Gynecia is the queen of Arcadia. Wife to Basilius. Wise, beautiful. Like any longstanding spouse, knows how to get her way with her husband when push comes to shove. Vocal Part: Alto
PAMELA (she/her): Basilius and Gynecia’s older daughter. Princess of Arcadia. Confident and obsessed with her appearance. Confident and obsessed with her appearance regardless of what others think. Vocal Part: Mezzo-Soprano.
PHILOCLEA (she/her): The younger princess of Arcadia. Basilius and Gynecia’s younger daughter. Shy and a “good girl”, she yearns to follow her heart rather than obey her father’s orders. Vocal part: Soprano
MUSIDORUS (he/him): A young shepherd who courts Philoclea. Goofy and clueless but means well. Vocal Part: Tenor
MOPSA (she/her): Daughter of Dametas and handmaiden to Pamela, whom she also falls in love with. Warm, skeptical. Growing up without a mother has made her wise beyond her years about everyone and everything, which is why she often serves as a narrator to the action. Vocal Part: Mezzo-Soprano
DAMETAS (he/him): The King’s viceroy; father to Mopsa. Vocal Part: Tenor
PYTHIO (they/them/any): The Oracle; powerful, mysterious. Demanding. Great sense of humor–can see through everyone–they are the Oracle of Delphi, after all. Isn’t limited to gender, ethnicity, or conventional beauty standards.
ENSEMBLE: Casting 12 performers who must be strong vocalists and dancers. Ensemble members portray unique, charismatic individuals who inhabit the kingdom of Arcadia and also minions to the Oracle, Pythio.
