Join us for a comedic musical centered around six awkward middle-schoolers competing for the spelling championship.
Auditions will be held July 7th and 8th, with appointments available from 6 pm to 10 pm. Email MacKenzie Ulibarri at om@gilberttheater.com to reserve an audition time slot. If you are submitting a self-tape, it must be received no later than 6 PM July 7th. We are only seeking actors and actresses ages 18 and older for this production.

CHARACTERS
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features performance opportunities for actors of all levels of experience. Listed below are the supporting roles that are available. We hope to reflect the diversity of our community, so all roles are open to all races and ethnicities.
Rona Lisa: Number one realtor in Putnam County and a former spelling bee champion.
Vice Principal Douglas: Resuming his duties after a five-year hiatus.
Mitch Mahoney: Official Comfort Counselor. ) Mitch is an ex-convict performing his community service with the Bee.
Olive Ostrovsky: A newcomer with a dictionary in her hand.
William Barfée: A finalist from last year with a “magic foot”.
Logainne SchwartzandGrubenierre: Youngest and most politically aware.
Marcy Park: Over-achiever.
Leaf Coneybear: Homeschooled and wearing a homemade cape.
Chip Tolentino: Boy Scout and former champion.
(All other character’s double)
Carl Grubenierre: One of Logainne’s fathers; he has set his heart on his little girl winning the Bee, no matter what he must do, including sabotaging William’s foot. Usually played by the actor who plays Leaf.
Dan Schwartz: Logainne’s other father; he is more laid back and content than Carl but is still intent on his daughter winning the Bee. Usually played by the actor who plays Mitch.
Leaf’s Dad: Doubtful and finds his son annoying and unintelligent. Usually played by the actor who plays Barfée.
Leaf’s Mom: Overprotective and doubtful of her son’s abilities to stand up to the competition. Usually played by the actor who plays Logainne.
Leaf’s Siblings: Not very confident of Leaf’s abilities, to say the least. They often ridicule him for having lower intelligence compared to everyone else in the family. Usually played by the remaining spellers (both cast and the volunteer audience spellers).
Regarding Working at the Gilbert
The Gilbert Theater is a semi-professional, community-minded theater which offers paid positions to professional and semi-professional actors in leading or specialty roles and volunteer opportunities.
Actor Compensation
The theater is unable to compensate actors at a level which recognizes the value of their talent, training, or time in the way a fully professional company might. Compensation ranges from Guest Artist to a simple gas stipend. Contract terms are negotiated individually.
***The Gilbert Theater has a noted history of cross-gender and non-traditional casting practices. Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are strongly encouraged to audition.
Theatre’s Statement
The Gilbert continues to actively explore ways to engage with our diverse community in regards to the representation of culture, race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, and disability on and off stage. We create more opportunities for actors and other artists who have been historically underrepresented on and off the stage.
