Theatre Charlotte Summer Intensive Apprenticeships
Apprenticeship opportunities will be available for students ages 18 and older in support of both the Student Theatre Guild and TCjr. programs. Applications can be found here and will be accepted until March 15, 2024. Interviews will begin the week of March 25th. Theatre Charlotte does not provide for transportation, food or housing during the program. Apprentices will receive $1,000 and a tuition waiver for each program.
Dates for the program:
STG takes place June 17-21 and 24-28 from 9am until 5pm with tentative evening music rehearsals the week of June 24th.
Performances: STG’s production of Alice by Heart will be June 28, 29 and July 5,6 at 8pm with matinee performances on June 30th and July 7th.
TCjr will be held from July 8-12 and 15-19, 2024 from 9am until 4:30pm.
TCjr Performances: Dear Edwina Jr. will be July 19th and 20th at 7pm with a matinee performance on July 20th.
Apprentices will be chosen from the following disciplines:
Performance: Apprentices in this field should demonstrate experience acting or directing and will be working with the director of each program on scene work, blocking and character development. Responsibilities include and are not limited to:
- Uphold the mission and values of Theatre Charlotte’s summer intensive programs.
- Lead small group or individual scene work.
- Lead students through team building exercises and skill building games.
- At the discretion of the director, may be asked to block a scene or scenes within the show.
- Will work backstage or front of house during performances.
- Will assist the Stage Manager in facilitating the use of space and identifying space needs in order to maintain the production schedule.
- Ensure that all students are engaged in activities related to the show and provide additional support to individuals or groups as needed to stay on task.
- Assist in setting up rehearsal spaces.
- Support the entire apprenticeship team where needed in order to put everyone in the best position for success.
Choreography/Movement: Apprentices in this discipline should have demonstrated outstanding dance and movement with the ability to teach choreography under the guidance of the choreographer of the STG production.
Responsibilities include and are not limited to:
- Uphold the mission and values of Theatre Charlotte’s summer intensive programs.
- Serve as the dance captain for the STG program.
- At the discretion of the director, may be asked to choreograph for the TCjr production.
- Work with groups or individuals who need additional help with dance or movement.
- Maintain the integrity and quality of the choreography in the absence of the lead choreographer.
- Lead physical warm ups for rehearsals and performances.
- Will work backstage or front of house during performances.
- Assist in setting up rehearsal spaces.
- Support the entire apprenticeship team where needed in order to put everyone in the best position for success.
Music: Apprentices in this field should have demonstrated experience in vocal performance and have the ability to teach music from a score or soundtrack. The ability to read music and/or play an instrument is preferred. Responsibilities include and are not limited to:
- Uphold the mission and values of Theatre Charlotte’s summer intensive programs.
- Work alongside the Music Director for STG.
- Serve as the primary music teacher for the TCjr program.
- Work with individuals or groups who need additional vocal coaching.
- Lead vocal warmups for rehearsals and performances.
- Will work backstage or front of house during performances.
- Assist in setting up rehearsal spaces.
- Support the entire apprenticeship team where needed in order to put everyone in the best position for success.
Technical Theatre: Apprentices must have demonstrated experience in at least one of the following technical theatre disciplines: Scenic Design, Scenic Construction/Carpentry, Scenic Painting, Lighting Design, Master Electrician, Sound Design, Sound Engineer, Costume Design, Costume Construction. Responsibilities will be geared towards the area of experience but will include set work so experience with power tools is a plus. Other responsibilities include and are not limited to:
- Uphold the mission and values of Theatre Charlotte’s summer intensive programs.
- Assist the Technical Director as needed. This may include set construction, painting, procuring or building props and more.
- Will work backstage or run lights or sound during performances.
- May be asked to lead additional technical support staff such as carpenters, electricians, stitchers, etc.
- Assist in setting up stage space for rehearsals.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment on stage, backstage and in the scene shop.
- Support the entire apprenticeship team where needed in order to put everyone in the best position for success.
Administration: Apprentices in this discipline will have demonstrated experience in marketing, graphic design and team leadership. Responsibilities include and are not limited to:
- Uphold the mission and values of Theatre Charlotte’s summer intensive programs.
- Create and execute social media marketing and promotions related to each program.
- Interview cast and production team members throughout the process.
- Work front of house (i.e. box office, house manage) during performances.
- Collect information for the playbill and create it (both digital and print).
- Collect and distribute paperwork as needed to support the production team, staff and apprentices.
- Work with marketing team on additional avenues for marketing and promoting the performances.
- Maintain an active social media presence related to each program.
- Will be trained on the ticketing system.
- Distribute and collect necessary paperwork and forms for participants.
- Assist in setting up rehearsal spaces.
- Support the entire apprenticeship team where needed in order to put everyone in the best position for success.
Production Stage Manager: A production stage manager will be chosen to work on each production and must be organized and have demonstrated leadership experience. An additional stipend is available for working both productions. Responsibilities include and are not limited to:
- Uphold the mission and values of Theatre Charlotte’s summer intensive programs.
- Create daily reports for the production team.
- Record blocking.
- Work with the Performance Apprentice to maintain the production and day to day rehearsal schedule.
- Communicate changes to the schedule with the production team and participants.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for parents of students in the program related to changes in the schedule, conflicts, absences and tardiness.
- Facilitate an end of day meeting for the production team and apprentices.
- Open and secure the building at the beginning and end of each day or rehearsals and performances.
- Call cues during performances and maintain the integrity of the show as created by the production team.
- Assist in setting up rehearsal spaces.
- Support the entire apprenticeship team where needed in order to put everyone in the best position for success.
