About the Play:
This bold, poetic adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic reimagines the tale of Cyrano de Bergerac, the brilliant swordsman and wordsmith whose fierce wit and eloquence mask his deepest insecurities. As he wrestles with unspoken love for the radiant Roxane, Cyrano must decide whether hiding behind his words is worth the price of silence. With grand romance, swashbuckling adventure, and unforgettable language, Cyrano speaks to the power of words and the cost of hiding behind them.
What To Prepare:
A 1-2 minute dramatic monologue of your choice. Classical preferred.
Please be prepared to cold-read scenes with others
Cast of characters:
In reference to the character descriptions below – The characters in this show are on the binary and written with he/him or she/her pronouns as you will see in the following descriptions. However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to list on the audition form the roles they most identify with.
Cyrano de Bergerac –This role has been precast
Roxane – This role has been precast
Christian de Neuvillette – Handsome and brave but inarticulate, Christian embodies outer beauty without the eloquence to express his heart. His partnership with Cyrano allows him to woo Roxane with borrowed poetry.
Comte de Guiche – A powerful nobleman and soldier who desires Roxane for himself. Cunning and proud, he becomes both Cyrano’s rival and, later, his reluctant admirer.
Le Bret – Cyrano’s loyal friend and confidant, pragmatic where Cyrano is idealistic.
Ragueneau – A baker and poet whose love of verse often interferes with his business sense. His warmth and humor provide a human counterpoint to the play’s romantic drama.
Duenna – Roxane’s loyal and practical chaperone, she provides comic relief and warmth through her down to earth observations.
Sister Martha – A gentle and compassionate nun who tends to Cyrano in his final days.
Poetess – A lively admirer of verse and pastries, she embodies the artistic energy of Parisian life.
Actress at the Hotel de Bourgogne – A spirited performer who helps open the play’s bustling theatrical world.
