UNC Chapel Hill seeks an Assistant Professor of Dramaturgy

The Department of Dramatic Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Dramaturgy, beginning July 1, 2027.

At Carolina, theatre scholarship and professional practice exist side by side. Established in 1936, the Department of Dramatic Art is the second-oldest theatre department in the country and is home to faculty who work as scholars, artists, teachers, and practitioners. PlayMakers Repertory Company, a professional LORT theatre, is embedded within the Department, creating opportunities for collaboration among faculty, students, and professional theatre artists.

We seek a scholar-artist with an active program of scholarly and/or creative research and expertise in the theatre and performance traditions of Asia, Africa, and/or Latin America. The successful candidate will teach a 2/2 undergraduate course load in areas including dramaturgy, theatre history, dramatic literature, and related fields; mentor students; and contribute to the intellectual, artistic, and production life of the Department.

The Department recognizes creative and professional theatre practice as faculty research alongside traditional scholarly activity. Research may include publications, presentations, dramaturgy, new-play development, and other scholarly or creative work appropriate to the discipline. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute dramaturgically and collaboratively to PlayMakers Repertory Company and/or the undergraduate Kenan Theatre Company.

Candidates must hold an MFA or other appropriate terminal degree in Theatre, Performance Studies, Dramaturgy, or a closely related field by the time of appointment and demonstrate evidence of, or strong potential for, an active scholarly and/or creative research program and excellence in teaching. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated research and teaching expertise in theatre and performance traditions of Asia, Africa, and/or Latin America.

Salary: $76,000–$80,000, plus benefits.

Come teach, make, and create theatre with us at Carolina.
